Llewelyn Davies was invited to participate in an international competition to design the first phase of the expansion programme for Chongqing Jianbei Airport and was awarded the contract to develop the design. The construction of the 65,000m² terminal complex was completed in December 2005 to process 8 million passengers a year.
The design quality of the terminal was reinforced by the distinctive roof profile, which echoed the shapes of the mountains surrounding the city. Fully glazed curtain walling and strategically located roof lights maximised daylight penetration and outward views across the airfield from the terminal, creating a concourse that is airy, spacious and calm.
