Lakeside, Thurrock
Client
Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation
Lakeside and West Thurrock is an important showcase for development and regeneration in Thurrock and the wider Thames Gateway. However, the dominance of infrastructure, heavy industry and the regional shopping centre has contributed to the area’s unwelcoming image and the reality of pollution and traffic congestion. Llewelyn Davies was commissioned to produce a master plan to reinvigorate the area and transform its image.
Central to this process was a strategy that consolidates and enhances the area’s built and economic assets, by focusing their activity on continuous high quality public realm. This 3km ‘interactive corridor’ provides the structure for reconfiguring land uses and ensuring residents and visitors can enjoy the area’s multiple, but under exploited environmental assets, including its magnificent waterfront.
The site of the old tannery lies within the conservation area between the old city walls and the river. Impacting on views of the Cathedral, the site is under the scrutiny of CABE, English Heritage and various lobby groups. Following our masterplan and urban design for the Council, Llewelyn Davies developed the scheme for Bellway Homes up to a full planning application, achieving high densities in a very sensitive location. This mixed use scheme includes over 450 apartments and townhouses
