Qatar Airways Village is a unique design with an immediately identifiable overall building form, crafted in a self evidently aesthetically satisfying way. Qatar Airways Village is intended ‘to be a magnet to attract the best trained and most efficient airline staff in the world’. Accordingly the Village has ‘a strong sense of place’ and is ‘a comfortable, convenient and an inspirational place to live in.’ The planning and design ‘sets a standard for modern living in the capital Doha and provides the physical framework for a high quality of life.
The iconic form of the canopy across the site serves as an energy generator. Overlaid on the leaves of the canopy are state-of-the-art photovoltaic cells and solar thermal panels that could provide approximately 60% of the renewable energy needs of the community on site covering approximately 105,000m² of the roof area.
To promote a sense of community the population is split into smaller identifiable neighbourhoods of circa 2,500 people. Qatar Airways Village will be the size of a small town and could be characterised as ‘a city within a city’.
