SNF General Hospital of Komotini

The new General Hospital of Komotini is part of the Stavros Niarchos Health Initiative, which is expected to exceed $500m and includes the design, construction and outfitting of 3 hospitals in Greece. Llewelyn Davies has been selected as Healthcare Experts and is working in close collaboration with world-renowned architect Renzo Piano.

The hospital will provide healthcare services for the local population of Komotini and will act as a secondary hub for the wider area of East Macedonia and Thrace, including 180 beds, Critical Care, 6 Operating Theatres, 16 Outpatient Clinics, Haemodialysis, Emergency Department with Observation Unit, a 15-bed Mental Health Unit,  Helipad and all necessary diagnostic equipment.

Innovation

• The design facilitates critical patient pathways and aids admission avoidance.
• In most surgical specialties up to 50% of workload is transferred to day procedures.
• The superstructure and façade of the hospital will be constructed from timber.

• LEED Platinum accreditation is targeted as one of the first hospitals in Europe.
• The hospital will be embedded in a park with healing gardens, based on the ancient Greek concept of the Asklepion.
