The new University Pediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki is part of the Stavros Niarchos Global Health Initiative, which is expected to exceed $1 billion and includes the design, construction and outfitting of 3 hospitals in Greece. Llewelyn Davies has been selected as Healthcare Experts and is working in close collaboration with world-renowned architect Renzo Piano.
About the project
The new Children’s Hospital will be the first tertiary pediatric centre outside Athens and will be a focal point for clinical excellence and research in collaboration with the Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki.
The design of the new campus on the outskirts of Thessaloniki contains – on a total floor area of 45,000m2 – the hospital with 245 beds, a 20-bedded Mental Health Unit and a Research Centre.

Additional insights
- The masterplan design concept is based on a campus solution. The superstructure and façade of the hospital will be constructed from timber.
- Net Carbon Zero-ready design LEED Platinum accreditation is targeted as one of the first hospitals in Europe.
- The hospital will be embedded in a park with healing gardens, based on the ancient Greek concept of the “Asklepion”.
